Chelsea weigh up Torres bid Empty Chelsea weigh up Torres bid

This morning, the Daily Mail reported that Roman Abramovich is considering an audacious £50 million bid for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres. The Spaniard had been outlined by former manager Avram Grant as a priority summer target to reinforce Chelsea’s attacking line-up which might be further weakened this summer by the possible departures of Andriy Shevchenko and Didier Drogba.
Now manager-less Chelsea want to chase Grants’s proposed targets as they will be anxious to get involved in the transfer market early on to ensure that they do not miss out on any deals. Players signed by the board are not always wellcome by managers who generally like to have autonomy on the transfer market. However it would be hard to believe that anybody will object to having Fernando Torres in their squad and that is also the view that the Chelsea board is taking, according to the Daily Mail.
The Spanish striker has scored 33 goals in an amazing debut season at Liverpool and has been one of the bright stars in an otherwise dissapointing season for Rafa Benitez’ men. Naturally after such a good season, the Anfield faithfull have taken Torres to heart and they would be furious should the board decide to sell one of the clubs most prized assets.
Should Chelsea’s bid for the Spaniard be succesfull, Fernando Torres would become football’s most valuable all-time player breaking the current record held by French legend Zinedine Zidane. Chelsea would welcome such a player as they will look to come back stronger next season after a disappointing campaign.
